About Garyounis  
   
 

The University of Garyounis is located in Benghazi, which is the second largest city in Libya, North Africa. Benghazi is bounded to the north of the Mediterranean Sea and is situated at 32◦ latitude to north of the equator with the longitude 20◦ east of Greenwich.

The University was established on December 15, 1955. It was then named the Libyan University. The first nucleus of this university was the Faculty of Arts and Education, which included 31 students, 6 professors and 9 administrative staff members.

In 1973, the name of the university was changed from the Libyan University to the University of Benghazi. In the academic year 1973-1974 the university moved out of the city of Benghazi to its recent position in the Garyounis area. In 1976, its name was changed again: the University of Garyounis became the official name instead of the University of Benghazi.

The university has been developing and expanding, with the result that it has become a city including a large number of faculties as well as facilities. It has many campuses and scientific institutes inside Benghazi. Its total area is about 460 hectares.

Each year, Garyounis University registers approximately 35,230 students, of which about 1300 students are not Libyans. They study in nine faculties (75 academic sections). The number of professors who teach in the university is 1,300 with approximately 270 teaching assistants, in addition to 2,000 employees.

The number of graduate students who have been awarded their BA or BSC degree during the academic years 1958-1969 is approximately 62,000 from different faculties in a variety of scientific specializations. The actual beginning for the post-graduate studies program was in the year 1978. The University of Garyounis also awards the MA and PhD degree. The number of post-graduate students totals about 1,700 students, of which 830 have received the MA degree as well as the PhD degree. The University of Garyounis gives also honorary certificates in the following fields: Science, Knowledge, Arts, Policy, Law, and Economics.
