The University of Garyounis

The University of Garyounis was established in the city of Benghazi in 1955. It consisted of a single faculty, "Arts and Education" with a very small number of students and staff, consisting of 31 students and 6 professors. It began in a small building, but today it is completely different, for it has grown to become a kind of city which includes many campuses and facilities in an area of approximate 460 hectares.

Garyounis University now incorporates five faculties on the main campus of the University of Garyounis. It also has four faculties of Medicine outside the Garyounis area, a Faculty of Dentistry, as well as a large number of Teacher Training Faculties in many cities around Benghazi.

Garyounis University is a scientific institution which has an independent personality. It is administered by the People's Committee of the University. This committee consists of the Secretary of the People's Committee of the University, otherwise known as the president, the Assistant Secretary, (the vice president) and the Secretaries of the People's Committees of the individual faculties, (the Deans) in addition to other administrative departments.
